Taiwan Official Released on Bail Amid Bid-Rigging Probe

Yun-Chia-Nan Coastal National Scenic Area Administration Director Hsu Chen-neng is under investigation for allegedly awarding government procurement bids to specific companies. Prosecutors searched related locations on July 20, seizing bid documents and evidence. Hsu and two other defendants were brought in for questioning.

On July 22, the Tainan District Court ruled that there was no necessity for the detention of the three defendants. Hsu and the others were released on bail of NT$500,000 (approximately $15,000 USD) each. They are also subject to restrictions on residency, leaving the country, and sailing.

The investigation began after the Taichung Investigation Bureau received information suggesting unusual activity in procurement bids for the scenic area. Hsu is suspected of improperly awarding a bid for the Mashagou Scenic Area project to a specific contractor. The court stated that while the current evidence suggests grounds for detention, a comprehensive assessment of the investigation's progress and the defendants' circumstances led to the decision to grant bail.

Hsu Chen-neng's phone was turned off, and he could not be reached for comment. The case is still under further investigation.
