Taiwan Retailers Assure Public on Imported Vegetable Safety Amid China Formaldehyde Cabbage Scare

Concerns are circulating in Taiwan regarding the safety of imported vegetables, particularly after reports emerged of Chinese businesses allegedly using formaldehyde solutions to extend the shelf life of cabbage. This has led consumers to question the origin and safety of produce, especially after noticing that some imported "baby bok choy" from Vietnam remained fresh for up to three weeks when refrigerated.

Retailers including PX Mart, Taiwan Costco, and Carrefour have publicly addressed these anxieties. They collectively assure the public that all imported fruits and vegetables sold in their stores have successfully passed government inspections and comply with relevant regulations. These companies emphasized their commitment to food safety and urged consumers to remain calm.

Costco specifically noted that fresh or refrigerated cabbage from China is legally prohibited from being imported into Taiwan. They stated that any overseas incidents involving such products are distinct from the supply situation in Taiwan. The company reiterated its dedication to food safety and continuous monitoring of regulatory information to ensure member confidence.

Other retailers like Wan Jia Fu and Le Jia Kang also confirmed that imported produce receives FDA import permits and undergoes regular inspections to guarantee quality and safety. The collective response from these major retailers aims to alleviate public concern and reinforce trust in the safety protocols governing imported food products in Taiwan.
