Taiwan’s Army Aviation 602 Brigade assault unit receives top military honor after typhoon relief work

The Army Aviation 602 Brigade’s assault helicopter operations unit received Taiwan’s model military group award after helping with disaster relief during Typhoon Ragasa last year.

Colonel Gong Yulin, the unit’s commander, said the team prepared for its missions and moved quickly into relief operations during the typhoon. He credited the unit’s mobility and emergency-response capabilities, saying that every successful mission depended on the cooperation of all personnel.

President Lai Ching-te presided over the Military Day and All-out Defense Education Day awards ceremony at the Defense Ministry. The event presented 175 awards across six categories, including military role models, model military group commanders, outstanding contributions to all-out defense education, military-support models and reserve-affairs instructors.

Gong said discipline formed the foundation of the unit’s combat capability. Aviation personnel must follow procedures closely in daily work, mission preparation and flight training, he said. Every training flight relies on cooperation between air and ground crews.

The ceremony also honored Air Force Air Defense and Missile Command 613 Battalion’s 3rd Company commander, Major Wu Chih-chien, as a military role model. Wu said the unit operates Sky Bow III air-defense missiles and that personnel remain capable of carrying out readiness duties through regular training as Chinese military aircraft continue to approach Taiwan.

Sergeant Lai Yu-lin of the Military Police 202 Command’s Armored Infantry 239 Battalion received an award for outstanding contributions to all-out defense education. He said military recruitment required collective effort and should help the public understand the armed forces, their current situation and the professional nature of military work.
