The anticipated "Blue-White Alliance" between Taiwan's Kuomintang (KMT) and People's Party for the Hsinchu mayoral election has officially collapsed, with the People's Party candidate vowing to run independently.

Chiu Chen-yuan, the People's Party candidate for Hsinchu mayor, confirmed the breakdown of negotiations after KMT candidate Wu Hsu-chih registered for the election. Chiu stated he would "run to the end," emphasizing that there is "no room for retreat."

He specifically called out KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wen, accusing her of failing to uphold promises made to the People's Party regarding the alliance. Chiu indicated that People's Party Chairman Huang Kuo-chang would hold a press conference to detail the negotiation process and the reasons for the collapse.

Chiu expressed concern that the failure of the alliance in Hsinchu could negatively impact the KMT's chances in the New Taipei County mayoral race and potentially create a "spillover effect" on other KMT candidates in closely contested mayoral elections.

He recalled earlier discussions where the People's Party had considered nominating him for county magistrate, but ultimately agreed to support the KMT's primary winner for that position to facilitate the alliance. The Hsinchu mayoral candidacy was then to be filled by the People's Party. Chiu believes the KMT's failure to honor this agreement necessitates Cheng Li-wen taking political responsibility.

The collapse of this alliance is viewed as a significant setback for broader KMT-People's Party cooperation, potentially jeopardizing the foundation for a similar partnership in the 2028 presidential election.
