Taiwan's Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu discusses trade, deeper ties with US

Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu met with U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson in Washington on Friday, engaging in discussions focused on shared priorities including Taiwan-U.S. security cooperation, economic and trade ties, and industrial collaboration.

During the meeting, Han advocated for continued U.S. support for the U.S.-Taiwan Expedited Double-Tax Relief Act, aiming to expedite its legislative process and further promote bilateral investment and trade. The bill, previously passed by the U.S. House, seeks to resolve double taxation issues between the two economies.

Accompanying Han was Representative to the U.S. Alexander Yui. Following the meeting with Johnson, Han and the Taiwanese delegation met with U.S. Department of State officials. These discussions centered on enhancing Taiwan-U.S. collaboration in security and drone development, as well as facilitating Taiwan's participation in international affairs and promoting Taiwanese investment in the U.S.

The cross-party delegation, comprising lawmakers from the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), Taiwan People's Party, and Democratic Progressive Party, began its six-day trip in Phoenix, Arizona, visiting Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s facilities before heading to Washington. The delegation also met with Democratic senators and representatives, and visited officials at the White House and the U.S. Department of Defense.
