Taiwan's Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu stresses balanced economy at business handover

Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu attended a leadership transition ceremony for the Tuku Good COOL Business Association in Yunlin County, Taiwan. During the event, he lightheartedly recalled that the last time he oversaw a similar handover of seals of office was two years ago when he did so for President Lai Ching-te, drawing laughter from the audience.

Han presided over the transfer of the association's seal and mascot, "Ya Ya Jin," from the first-term chairman, Wei An-chu, to the new chairman, Wang Wei-sheng. He stressed the significant responsibility of the new chairman, noting that Taiwan has been caught in a "delusion" in recent years.

Taiwan's high-tech industries like semiconductors and wafer manufacturing lead the world, but if a country's development only progresses in high-tech, it's like a person's brain is very smart and healthy, but the limbs are slowly losing strength. Taiwan's economy absolutely cannot be like this.

While acknowledging Taiwan's global leadership in high-tech industries like semiconductors, Han cautioned against over-reliance on this sector. He used the analogy of a smart, healthy brain with weak limbs, arguing that economic development must be more holistic. With less than a million people in high-tech out of a 10.5 million labor force, he highlighted the need to support the remaining 9.5 million workers, including farmers, laborers, and those in the retail and service industries.

Taiwan's high-tech industry employs less than 1 million people out of the national labor force of 10.5 million. So what about the remaining 9.5 million people? Seeing Chairman Wei's dedicated efforts to revitalize the local business district is moving.

Former chairman Wei An-chu highlighted the association's achievements since its establishment in 2022, including organizing events that boosted tourism and earning awards for development potential and sustainable urban development. New chairman Wang Wei-sheng expressed his commitment to strengthening local business connections, fostering a "mother hen leading chicks" dynamic for new businesses, and promoting inter-business collaboration to enhance the tourist experience in Tuku.
