Taiwan's Nanhua Reservoir Overflows, Tunnels Opened for Water and Sediment Release

Taiwan's Nanhua Reservoir, the second-largest in the southern region, is currently overflowing due to persistent rainfall from an active low-pressure system.

The reservoir reached its full capacity on August 21st, initiating its second natural overflow of the year. Heavy rainfall in the catchment area has led to a substantial inflow of water. In response, the Water Resources Agency's Sixth Regional Management Office has activated the sediment-discharging tunnels to increase water release and simultaneously manage sand accumulation.

Water is being released at a maximum rate of 550 cubic meters per second. The agency is urging residents living downstream along the Houkuchi River to stay away from the riverbanks for their safety, given the significant volume of water being discharged. The operation of these tunnels serves a dual purpose: releasing excess water and flushing out sediment, a process crucial for clearing silt and prolonging the reservoir's operational life.

The continuous rainfall, with daily accumulation exceeding 100 millimeters for two consecutive days, necessitated the activation of the tunnels. The Nanhua Reservoir is a vital source of water for daily life in the region, and its current state highlights the impact of recent weather patterns on water management infrastructure.
