Taiwan's TPP Launches Historic First Delegation to Mainland China for Dialogue

The Taiwan People’s Party (TPP), a smaller opposition party in Taiwan, has embarked on its first formal delegation to mainland China, signaling a commitment to maintaining cross-strait peace through dialogue. The nine-member group arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday for a four-day visit.

The delegation's agenda includes youth exchanges, urban governance, artificial intelligence, technological innovation, and entrepreneurship. Led by Lee Wei-hwa, chairman of the TPP Central Review Committee, the group comprises three party cadres and five youth wing members. Lee described the visit as a historic milestone for the party, founded in 2019 by former Taipei mayor Ko Wen-je. He stressed the critical need for communication, especially during times of severe cross-strait political tension and global unease.

This is the first time since the Taiwan People’s Party was founded that it has formally organised a delegation to mainland China for a visit and exchanges.

"At a time when the cross-strait political situation is severe and the global situation is tense, the darker the moment, the more we cannot afford to lose communication," Lee stated before the delegation's departure. "The greater the differences, the more we need dialogue."
