Taiwan to Launch 'Health Coin' in October for Check-ups, Vaccinations, and Screenings

Taiwan is set to launch its "Health Coin" initiative in October, a novel incentive program designed to encourage citizens to prioritize preventive healthcare. The program aims to reward individuals for engaging in crucial health services such as adult health check-ups, cancer screenings, and vaccinations.

The initiative is a key component of the "Healthy Taiwan" policy, championed by President Lai Ching-te. Its overarching goal is to shift the nation's healthcare paradigm from reactive disease treatment to proactive health promotion and disease prevention. This focus is particularly critical given Taiwan's health statistics: chronic diseases account for seven of the top ten causes of death, and cancer has been the leading cause of death for 44 consecutive years.

Under the "earn-as-you-go" model, citizens will receive Health Coins for participating in preventive health examinations, including screenings for Hepatitis B and C, breast cancer, oral cancer, and lung cancer. Vaccinations are also included in the reward system. The government is collaborating with a wide range of partners, including convenience stores, hypermarkets, insurance companies, medical facilities, pharmacies, and sports venues, to gradually expand the redemption channels for these coins.

This program directly addresses the significant burden of chronic diseases and cancer on Taiwan's population and healthcare system. In 2024, expenditures related to "three highs" (hypertension, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia) reached NT$177.9 billion, while medical costs for the top ten cancers in 2023 amounted to NT$156.7 billion. By incentivizing preventive care, Taiwan hopes to reduce the prevalence of these conditions and alleviate pressure on its national health insurance finances, aiming to lower the proportion of unhealthy life expectancy from 10% to 8% by 2030.
