Taiwan Vice Foreign Minister Affirms "Strategic Alliance" with Paraguay in Asunción Visit

Taiwan's Vice Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi has reinforced the "strategic alliance" between Taiwan and Paraguay during his visit to the South American nation's capital, Asunción. He met with Paraguayan Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez to discuss the robust state of bilateral relations.

The two officials reviewed advancements in current cooperation projects and explored avenues for further collaboration. Taiwan's delegation expressed gratitude for Paraguay's consistent support for Taiwan's participation in international organizations. They also congratulated Paraguay on its selection for a vice presidency of the UN General Assembly.

Discussions also highlighted the steady growth in bilateral trade, solidifying Taiwan's position as a key Asian partner for Paraguay. Key cooperation initiatives examined include the construction of the Asunción General Hospital, the development of the Paraguay-Taiwan Polytechnic University campus, and the implementation of a digital health information system.

Looking ahead to the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027, both sides agreed to promote a commemorative agenda reflecting their historical bond, characterized by mutual trust, cooperation, and friendship. Despite some domestic calls for closer ties with China, Paraguay's government maintains its relationship with Taipei is based on shared values. Paraguay is one of twelve countries worldwide, and the only one in South America, to maintain official diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
