Taiwan woman jailed for stalking ex-husband with 92 calls in bid to reconcile

A woman in Changhua, Taiwan, has been sentenced to 15 days of detention for stalking her ex-husband in an attempt to reconcile after their divorce. The court found her actions constituted a violation of the anti-stalking law.

The woman, identified by her surname Liu, continued to contact her ex-husband, surnamed He, through calls and messages after their divorce in August 2024. Despite He explicitly asking her to cease contact except for matters concerning their child, Liu persisted. Her harassment escalated significantly on January 26, when she made 92 voice calls in a single day. She also sent a message on January 30 stating her intention to travel from Tainan to meet him for a meal and coffee.

Overwhelmed by the relentless harassment, which he stated was affecting his daily life and social activities, He reported the matter to the police and applied for a protection order. Liu admitted to the charges during the investigation but failed to reach a settlement with her ex-husband. The court considered her repeated actions and disregard for his wishes, sentencing her to 15 days of detention, which can be commuted to a fine of NT$15,000.
