Taiwan youth sports journalism camp expands after 237 applications, adding 16 places for Japanese-Taiwanese exchange

Demand for Taiwan’s first youth sports journalism camp exceeded expectations, with 237 applications arriving before the organizers expanded the program from 32 places to 48.

The Taiwan Sports Press Association will announce the first group of selected participants on Sept. 1, Taiwan’s Journalists’ Day. Association chairman Chin Hsi-yueh said the applications showed strong interest among young people in Taiwan’s sports media and sports industry.

The 48 participants include 45 students from 25 universities across Taiwan and three Japanese students from Ritsumeikan University. They include 18 men and 30 women. Organizers said the group will bring together students from media, communications, sports and other academic backgrounds, including people with competitive athletic experience.

I was deeply moved to see so many young people show enthusiasm for Taiwan’s sports media.

The five-day, four-night program will cover sports reporting, professional photography, video and new media, sports marketing and industry practice. Participants will take part in editorial meetings and production assignments rather than only attending lectures. Experienced sports reporters, photojournalists and industry professionals from Taiwan and abroad will serve as instructors.

A central feature will be practical reporting at the Evergreen Airlines Marathon. Participants will cover the pre-race expo, interview people and produce reporting, photographs, video and social media content during the race. The Chinese Olympic Committee will provide guidance, while the association will organize the camp with support from Taipei’s Department of Sports, the Chinese Taipei Sports Federation and other partners.

The 237 applications represent more than a number. They show the expectations that the younger generation has for sports news and the sports industry.
