Taiwanese baseball team cancels guest appearance by Hong Kong singer Chen Xiaodong

The Taishang Xiong Ying baseball team has canceled a planned appearance by Hong Kong singer Chen Xiaodong following significant fan backlash. Chen Xiaodong was slated to be the opening guest and performer for the team's "Eagle JOY Theme Day" on September 26.

The controversy stems from Chen Xiaodong's past political statements. During the 2019 Hong Kong "anti-extradition" protests, he participated in a Chinese state media campaign called "1.4 Billion Flag Protectors." He also posted on social media expressing support for "patriotism and Hong Kong" and condemning violence, which alienated some fans.

The team received many opinions from all walks of life since the event content was announced. After internal discussions, the team believes that there is indeed room for re-evaluation of this performance arrangement.

Following the announcement of his appearance, many fans voiced their dissatisfaction on the team's social media platforms. In response, Taishang Xiong Ying issued a statement confirming the cancellation of Chen Xiaodong's opening pitch and post-game performance.

The team acknowledged receiving numerous comments and suggestions, stating that they decided to adjust the event's content after internal discussions. The club emphasized that its original intention was for fans to enjoy the baseball game and the theme day experience. By canceling Chen Xiaodong's participation, the team aims to prevent the ongoing discussion from overshadowing the focus of the games and the event itself.
