Taiwanese-Canadian conductor to lead VMO in free Vancouver concert celebrating 2026 World Cup hosts

Taiwanese-Canadian conductor Ken-David Masur is set to lead the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra (VMO) in its 10th annual free outdoor symphony concert on August 13. This year's event, held at Jack Poole Plaza, will celebrate Vancouver's role as a co-host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by highlighting music from Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

The diverse program promises something for every music lover, featuring beloved film scores like John Williams' 'Jurassic Park' theme and Ennio Morricone's 'Cinema Paradiso' theme. Classical enthusiasts will enjoy pieces such as Ravel's 'Bolero,' Verdi's 'Aida' Triumphal March, and Tchaikovsky's '1812 Overture.' The concert will also showcase Canadian composer Godfrey Ridout's 'Fall Fair Overture' and Mexican composer Arturo Márquez's 'Danzón No. 2.'

Masur, who founded the VMO, expressed his excitement for the program, noting its blend of popular and classical works suitable for an outdoor setting. The concert aims to engage a wide audience, including the many tourists who visit the scenic Jack Poole Plaza, which offers stunning views of the waterfront and surrounding mountains.

In addition to the orchestral performances, the concert will feature guest artists including pianists Piotr Alexewicz and Wei Luo, violinists Rio Arai and Christel Lee, and cellist Jonathan Roozeman. The Chibi Taiko Group will also provide a special performance during the intermission. The VMO encourages attendees to bring folding chairs or blankets for comfort during the free event.
