Taiwanese Court Acquits Driver in Fatal Accident Case, Citing Motorcyclist's Fault

A driver accused of causing a fatal motorcycle accident has been acquitted by a court, which ruled that his actions constituted only "rushing a yellow light" and not a crime.

The incident occurred in Changhua's Yuanlin City when the driver, identified as Mr. Shi, was traveling north on Zhongshan Road. As he approached the intersection with Wanshan Road, the traffic signal turned red. However, the court found that Mr. Shi's vehicle had already crossed the stop line as the light changed, meaning he technically entered the intersection on a yellow light, not a red one as initially alleged.

According to the court's investigation, the motorcyclist, Ms. Chen, had entered the intersection before the light turned green, running a red light. She then abruptly cut into the inner lane where Mr. Shi was driving, colliding with the right side of his car. The entire maneuver by Ms. Chen, from entering the outer lane to changing lanes and the subsequent collision, reportedly took just over a second, making it extremely difficult for Mr. Shi to react.

The court concluded that Mr. Shi was not negligent in failing to notice the vehicle or pay attention to the road conditions. Instead, the primary cause of the accident was Ms. Chen's sudden and dangerous lane change after running a red light. While the accident exacerbated Ms. Chen's pre-existing heart condition, leading to her death from complications, the court determined that Mr. Shi bore no responsibility for the fatal outcome and thus found him not guilty.
