Taiwanese DPP Candidates Launch Lawyer Support Group

The "Shen Po-yang X Su Chiao-hui Lawyer Support Group" officially launched today, signaling a growing momentum in local election campaigns. Shen Po-yang, a candidate for Taipei mayor, and Su Chiao-hui, running for New Taipei mayor under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), aim to leverage their legal backgrounds to connect with voters.

Lawyers are an important force supporting the country, and we must use the law to protect the country.

Shen Po-yang articulated that legal professionals form a vital pillar for national stability, advocating for the use of law to protect the country. He acknowledged the presence of other legal professionals in politics, including Taiwan People's Party Chairman Huang Kuo-chang, and legislators Weng Hsiao-ling and Fu Kun-chi. However, he stressed that the majority of legal practitioners are deeply concerned with safeguarding the nation and contributing to public welfare.

The support group's inaugural event saw participation from other DPP legal candidates, including Yilan County Magistrate candidate Lin Kuo-chang and Taoyuan Mayor candidate Huang Shih-chieh. Shen noted that while he might be the least experienced among the legal professionals present, he recognized Su Chiao-hui as his senior from their graduate studies in the U.S. and Huang Shih-chieh as a senior from university. Lin Kuo-chang was known through community service activities.

Su Chiao-hui highlighted the DPP's nomination of numerous talented lawyers, emphasizing their role in supporting the weak, upholding justice, and possessing the ability to quickly resolve complex issues. She drew a parallel between their skills and the challenges of municipal governance. She also recalled the historical role of lawyers in Taiwan's democratic development, from opening the doors to democracy to advancing human rights, citing the legalization of same-sex marriage as a significant achievement.

Lin Kuo-chang, the most senior legal professional among the four, pledged to uphold legal principles and promote social welfare, referencing the first article of the Lawyers Act. Huang Shih-chieh reflected on the unexpected journey of running for office alongside Su and Shen, whom he knew from different stages of his career. He expressed confidence that their combined expertise in law, administration, and politics, coupled with their passion for public affairs, would be instrumental in fostering regional development and improving the quality of life in Northern Taiwan.
