Taiwanese lawmaker's budget cut sparks backlash, hints at 2028 presidential ambitions

Taiwanese legislator Hung Chiu-ling, a member of the opposition Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), has once again ignited controversy with her recent proposal to slash NT$30 million from the presidential office's discretionary fund. This move has not only angered netizens but also had a tangible impact on sheltered workshops, disrupting orders for their products, including Mid-Autumn Festival gift boxes made by individuals with disabilities.

The silence from prominent KMT figures, widely seen as potential presidential contenders for 2028, has been particularly noteworthy. Political commentator Chou Hsuan pointed out the unusual lack of defense from Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen and Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an, who typically engage actively in party-related debates. Chou sarcastically remarked on their quietness, comparing it to a high-quality Japanese compressor, suggesting they are avoiding association with Hung's contentious actions.

Chou Hsuan further elaborated on his observation via Facebook, highlighting Hung as a potential "dark horse" within the KMT. He contrasted her bold legislative move with the elaborate efforts, such as the July 25th rally at Ketagalan Boulevard, undertaken by Lu and Chiang. According to Chou, Hung's single proposal to cut the discretionary fund has overshadowed their extensive campaigning, significantly impacting social welfare groups and their product orders.
