Taiwanese military simulates bridge blockade drill near capital

Taiwan's military conducted a significant bridge blockade drill on Guangfu Bridge, a vital artery connecting New Taipei City and Taipei City, as part of the ongoing Han Kuang 42 exercises. The late-night operation on August 12 simulated scenarios where enemy forces might attempt to use critical bridges to advance directly towards the capital.

Under the assistance of the police, military police personnel began controlling the exercise area around 11:30 p.m. The drill focused on the immediate response actions of defending forces against such an enemy threat. Reporters observed fully armed military police, aided by civilian contractors, deploying defensive measures including barbed wire, barricades, and anti-tank obstacles.

Guangfu Bridge is a major thoroughfare connecting Banqiao District in New Taipei City with Wanhua District in Taipei City, providing a key route to the capital's central government areas. While other exercises in the Han Kuang series have focused on riverine blockades, this drill specifically emphasized the defense of critical strongholds and deep-zone combat.

The exercise provided an opportunity to showcase newly acquired equipment by the military police in recent years, highlighting their evolving capabilities in defending key infrastructure against potential threats. The drill underscores Taiwan's commitment to maintaining robust defenses for its capital region.
