Taiwanese officials buy 10,000 kg of bananas to support farmers and aid the needy

Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Secretary-General Hsu Kuo-yung, alongside legislator and Chiayi County Magistrate candidate Tsai Yi-yu, announced a "Proud of Taiwan, Trust Supports Agriculture" initiative on July 29. The campaign aims to support local farmers by purchasing 10,000 kilograms of Chiayi bananas, which will then be distributed to 25 disadvantaged welfare institutions and groups.

Hsu shared his personal tips for selecting the best bananas, humorously noting that the sides of a banana bunch are tastier than the center "C位" (center position). He emphasized the campaign's dual purpose: supporting local agriculture and giving back to the community through charitable donations.

Chiayi's banana production ranks third in the country, with major cultivation areas in Zhuqi and Zhongpu. Last year's Typhoon Dannes caused severe agricultural damage, and the post-disaster recovery efforts concentrated the harvest, leading to a large season this year.

Tsai explained that Chiayi is the third-largest banana-producing county in Taiwan, with major cultivation areas in Zhuqi and Zhongpu. Liu Kuo-lung, president of the national "Friends of Trust" association, recalled developing a habit of eating bananas during his studies abroad and thanked the DPP for its long-term support of farmers. The association mobilized its members to purchase the 10,000 kilograms of bananas for donation. Xu Zheng-ge, standing supervisor of the Taipei City "Friends of Trust" association, reported that the Taipei team had already purchased and distributed 2,500 kilograms of produce. Shen Qian-ci, vice president of the Taipei City association, added that bananas are nutritious and suitable for all ages, and the initiative was a response to the significant losses suffered by fruit farmers in central and southern Taiwan due to floods.
