Taiwanese Rider Caught for Drug Use After Traffic Stop; Faces Heavy Fines

Police in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, stopped a 47-year-old man, identified as Mr. Chang, for multiple traffic violations, including smoking while riding his motorcycle and failing to signal lane changes. During the stop, officers discovered his driver's license was suspended and noted his past drug-related offenses.

Despite claiming he had "not used for a long time," officers detected a drug odor on Mr. Chang. He presented a drug rehabilitation certificate in an attempt to convince the officers. However, a rapid saliva test administered at the scene yielded a positive result for amphetamines.

Mr. Chang was subsequently arrested and faces charges including drug use under the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act and endangering public safety. In addition to the drug offense, he will be fined for driving with a suspended license, smoking while operating a vehicle, and multiple instances of failing to use turn signals. The total fines could reach up to NT$138,000 (approximately $4,200 USD).

The incident highlights ongoing drug enforcement efforts in Kaohsiung. The police are pursuing legal action against Mr. Chang, who is being sent to the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office for further investigation.
