Taiwanese Screenwriter Marries Partner of 32 Years; Legislators Serve as Witnesses

Renowned screenwriter Chen Shih-chieh has married his partner of 32 years, Wang Tzu-yang, in a ceremony witnessed by legislators Shen Po-yang and Su Chiao-hui. The wedding marks a significant personal milestone for the couple, who have been together since they were 19.

Chen, who won a Golden Bell Award for Best Screenplay in 2006 for "Sparks," announced the marriage on Facebook, stating, "Entering my 60s and on the eve of our 32nd anniversary, Tzu-yang and I have finally registered our marriage." He shared that both he and Wang hail from southern Taiwan but built their lives together in Taipei and New Taipei City, considering them their second home.

The choice of Shen and Su as witnesses carried particular weight. Chen explained that he invited them to witness how Taiwan's democratic system has brought freedom, equality, dignity, and happiness through human rights. He expressed hope that fellow Taiwan supporters would join them in building a better future for these two great cities.

Adding a poignant layer to the ceremony, Su Chiao-hui remarked that the table where the marriage certificate was signed was the same one used when the Democratic Progressive Party caucus solidified its consensus on the same-sex marriage law. This detail underscored the journey towards marriage equality in Taiwan and added a deeply meaningful dimension to Chen and Wang's union.
