Taiwanese Special Forces Showcase Counter-Terrorism Skills, Instructor Stresses Training Over Gear

Taiwan's Military Police Special Services Unit showcased its counter-terrorism prowess during a recent visit by the Legislative Yuan's Foreign and National Defense Committee. Legislator Chen Guan-ting led the delegation, emphasizing the unit's crucial role in national security and its function as the core strike force for counter-terrorism and emergency response.

The visit included a briefing on the unit's history, mission, and training. Demonstrations featured various weapons, special operations vehicles, and drone reconnaissance equipment, highlighting diverse combat capabilities. A simulated hostage rescue drill depicted the unit's swift and precise response to a terrorist threat on public transport, showcasing their skills in close-quarters combat and emergency adaptation.

Chen Chung-kuang, a former member of the unit with 24 years of experience, stressed that "equipment can enhance capabilities, but it cannot replace them." He explained that true special forces strength is built on rigorous education, training, and solid fundamentals. The development of a special forces operative is a long-term process, requiring years of strict training, mission experience, and self-discipline to build professional competence.

Chen further elaborated on the "five-year phase" concept in special forces training: the first five years build foundations and willpower, the second five years accumulate experience and enhance professionalism, and subsequent phases involve passing on knowledge and management responsibilities. He noted that the greatest challenge for operatives is not just passing selection and training but consistently maintaining high standards over the long term. Despite technological advancements and the increasing complexity of modern counter-terrorism, Chen reiterated that even the most advanced equipment requires well-trained personnel to maximize its value.
