Taiwanese special forces simulate behind-enemy-lines operations in Han Kuang 42 drills

Taiwan's military launched intense drills as part of the Han Kuang 42 exercise, simulating a scenario where enemy forces have landed and established footholds on the island. The exercise focused on "deep defense and sustained operations," with special forces from the army, navy, and air force conducting behind-enemy-lines operations.

During the drills, special forces units infiltrated occupied areas under the cover of darkness, using advanced night vision and micro-drones to identify and neutralize enemy vehicles and high-ranking commanders. Snipers successfully executed precision strikes, aiming to disrupt the enemy's command and control structure. The Navy's amphibious reconnaissance battalion practiced "retention operations," blending into civilian life and using civilian vehicles to infiltrate urban areas for covert sabotage missions, effectively employing asymmetric warfare tactics.

Key objectives included securing vital transportation routes and defending urban centers. The Air Force Special Operations Command demonstrated its capability to rapidly deploy forces via Black Hawk helicopters to establish defensive positions and engage simulated enemy forces. The exercise also involved the Military Police Command and the Special Services Company (Night Hawk Unit) setting up multi-layered roadblocks on bridges, using civilian buses and anti-explosion barriers to channel enemy forces into pre-planned kill zones, where armored vehicles then engaged them with overwhelming firepower.

Military officials stated that these drills, conducted without scripts and with live, non-explosive munitions, tested the adaptability of special forces units in challenging scenarios, including enemy infiltration and the loss of initial positions. The exercise aimed to showcase the military's resolve to defend the homeland and its ability to conduct sustained operations even after initial defensive lines are breached, emphasizing the resilience of Taiwan's urban defenses.
