Taiwanese TV personality arrested in Japan for pouring liquid on national treasure; claims she was 'moved' and 'wanted to pray'

A well-known Taiwanese television personality has been arrested in Japan on suspicion of damaging a national treasure. Cai Yizhen, 39, was taken into custody by Nara prefectural police for allegedly pouring a liquid onto a significant cultural artifact at a Buddhist temple.

The incident reportedly took place on April 6 at Yakushiji temple in Nara. Cai Yizhen, who was visiting Japan with her family, is accused of pouring a clear, glycerin-based liquid onto the 'Buddha's Foot Stone.' This stone, dating back to 753 AD, is considered Japan's oldest Buddha's Foot Stone and is designated as a national treasure.

Authorities are investigating the act as a violation of the Cultural Properties Protection Law. If found guilty, Cai Yizhen could face a prison sentence of up to five years or a fine of up to one million yen (approximately $6,700 USD). As a foreign national, a conviction could also lead to deportation and a lifetime ban from entering Japan.

Cai Yizhen allegedly stated that she was moved by the artifact and intended to pray. However, her actions have led to her arrest and a potential legal battle in Japan, highlighting the strict laws protecting cultural heritage.
