Taiwanese wedding banquets bring heartfelt celebrations to New York City

The Taiwanese team behind the reality show "Let the World Eat Tables" faced their most challenging overseas banquet task yet in New York City. The group, including celebrities like Lan Cheng-lung and Sonia Sui, arrived in the cold city and immediately began warming up with a group jog, embracing the "New Yorker" spirit.

Their mission was to host a Taiwanese-style wedding banquet in Times Square, a location that presented numerous restrictions. The team had to maintain pedestrian walkways, work with limited stage space, and were prohibited from using gas, open flames, or large generators. Strict limitations were also placed on refrigeration and preparation areas, testing the crew's ability to adapt and improvise with each dish.

Even the American production staff admitted that organizing a Taiwanese banquet in Times Square was a novel challenge, unlike any event they had previously managed. Fortunately, they gained access to a well-equipped central kitchen, and the team received crucial support from Master Chef Yang, who had previously served as a chef for a former U.S. president.

The New York banquet aimed to fulfill the long-held wishes of three couples. One couple, Sobina and her partner, had their wedding canceled due to the pandemic and dreamed of a proper ceremony. The team flew a wedding dress from Taiwan and helped Sobina find the perfect gown, fulfilling a dream she had waited years for. Another couple, Yoyo and his partner, postponed their wedding due to busy schedules, with Yoyo hoping to perform on stage with his partner. The third couple, Xin Yi and Dannie, had Dannie planning a surprise proposal for Xin Yi, which the banquet team helped orchestrate, adding a deeply emotional touch to the event.

Beyond being the guests of honor, the couples became integral to the banquet preparations. Xin Yi and Dannie assisted the chefs in market shopping, while Yoyo and Sobina helped prepare the wedding performances and invited friends from various countries, aiming to introduce Taiwanese banquet culture to a global audience through their celebration. As Haozi, one of the hosts, reflected, the trip was about more than just the food; it was about helping people fulfill their aspirations and creating unforgettable memories without regrets.
