Take precautions: Marches and gatherings planned in Mexico City this Saturday, Sept. 5

Mexico City residents face a Saturday crowded with marches, protests, political events and solidarity gatherings across the capital. The city’s Security Secretariat said a Morena supporters’ mobilization would leave from the Angel of Independence for the Zócalo, where demonstrators will demand the removal of immunity and imprisonment of the PRI’s national president over alleged corruption, illicit enrichment, embezzlement and diversion of public funds.

At 9 a.m., Unidos por Tlatelolco plans to demonstrate at the Plaza de las Tres Culturas against Morena’s event, “In Defense of Transformation and National Sovereignty.” The group says the expected number of attendees could severely affect roads and public spaces used by local residents, disrupting their mobility, peace and daily lives.

The Permanent General Assembly of the People of San Gregorio Atlapulco will gather at 10 a.m. outside the Mexico City prosecutor’s office. Two years after what it describes as the repression and criminalization of protests involving defenders and journalists in Xochimilco and Tlalpan, the assembly will hold an information event about increased violence against communities.

At noon, Hijas de la Cannabis will hold the political-cultural event Rituales 4:20 at Plaza Tlaxcoaque, calling for free and safe spaces for women who use cannabis, with a gender perspective. At the Bellas Artes Metro station, the Feminist Self-Management Collective will collect signatures for a citizen initiative on medical assistance for dying. The proposal would allow patients with advanced or incurable illnesses to receive assistance for a dignified death.

At 5:30 p.m., Camilo Séptimo fans will gather at the Monument to the Revolution for “A Light for Honas and His Family,” a tribute to the band member’s memory and legacy. The article says Honas and his family were killed inside their apartment in the Esmeralda area of Atizapán de Zaragoza, in the State of Mexico, on Sept. 1. Other listed events include a collection of food, pet supplies and clothing for incarcerated people, and a boycott of the International Critical Thinking Book Fair over censorship and in support of freedom of expression and unrestricted access to information.
