Tampere: Police investigate man who opened police car door

Finland's Internal Police are investigating a man who opened the door of a police car in Tampere earlier in August. An officer seated in the back of the unmarked vehicle then drew their service weapon on the individual. The incident occurred during a traffic enforcement operation.

The investigation is currently focused on attempted motor vehicle theft, according to investigation leader Detective Inspector Joni Länsipuro. Länsipuro stated that the police would not have initiated a criminal report on their own; the notification came from an external party. "The preliminary investigation will assess whether there are grounds to suspect the person of a crime. It is possible that the investigation will reveal that no crime has occurred," Länsipuro said, adding, "The citizen was of the opinion that the matter should be investigated, so the police are investigating."

The investigation relates to a video recorded on August 12 in Tampere. The footage shows a man opening the door of an unmarked police car. The officer inside then points a service weapon at the man, saying, "Are you f***ing leaving? No need to break into anyone's car." Police have previously stated that the officer was on duty alone for traffic enforcement.

Separately, the Prosecutor's Office announced Tuesday that an investigation has been launched into the officer who brandished the weapon. The probe includes charges of dereliction of duty and unlawful threat. The officer is also slated to be transferred to different duties.
