Tampere's Historic Amuri District Faces Demolition for High-Rises

The historic Amuri district in Tampere, known for its wooden houses, is once again facing significant change. Decades after its original wooden structures were replaced by concrete element buildings in the 1960s and 1970s, these concrete buildings are now slated for demolition to make way for modern tower buildings.

This latest development has stirred considerable opposition among residents. In just two days, approximately 500 inhabitants of the Amuri neighborhood signed a petition protesting the Tampere city council's plans. The controversy intensified during the week of Midsummer when the city presented its zoning proposal at a public meeting held at the Tampere main library.

The city's plan involves the complete demolition of four blocks along Amurinkatu street. These blocks currently house four three-story residential buildings. They are set to be replaced by four new residential towers, with heights of five and nine stories, respectively. The development also includes extensive underground parking facilities.

Residents have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the proposal, with some described as being "käärmeissään" (furious or extremely angry). The push for modernization and increased housing density appears to be clashing with the preservation of the area's historical character, leading to a conflict between urban development goals and resident concerns.
