Tampere to host Finland's first Suomirock Grand Week

Tampere, Finland, is set to host its inaugural Suomirock Grand Week, a nine-day celebration of Finnish rock music running from August 1 to 9. The city will come alive with a series of concerts, related events, and programming dedicated to the history of "Manserock," the local rock scene of Tampere.

The festival kicks off on Saturday, August 1, with the "Manserock stadionilla" concert at Tammela Stadium. Sunday features Finnish rock music at the Puistofiesta in Hämeenpuisto park. The week culminates with three farewell concerts by the iconic Finnish band Eppu Normaali at Ratinan Stadium from August 6 to 8. These highly anticipated shows are expected to attract close to 100,000 fans.

According to Saara Saarteinen, Tampere's event manager, the idea for the themed week emerged from an exceptionally busy summer of events and the 70th birthday of Pauli "Pate" Mustajärvi, the lead singer of the band Popeda. "Suomirock songs are part of the shared memory of Finns," Saarteinen stated in a press release.

A notable new attraction is the "Manserock sing along" area in Koskipuisto park. From August 1 to 9, daily between 2 PM and 8 PM, attendees can sing along to famous Manserock hits. The area will be equipped with sound systems and a large screen displaying lyrics.

The Suomirock Grand Week also includes themed evenings at local restaurants, bingo, discos, and club gigs. Visitors can delve into the history of Manserock through the Vapriikki museum's exhibition and a dedicated "Manserock trail" connecting the Kaleva and city center areas. Tampere will be bustling with other events in early August, including the Tampere Theatre Festival, Night of Events, a Philharmonic park concert, and a Moomin-themed event at Tampere Hall.
