Tanzania seeks bigger role in Africa’s energy security drive

Tanzania is seeking a larger role in efforts to strengthen Africa’s energy security, with a push to attract more investment and increase local participation in its energy sector.

The issue was discussed on the first day of Africa Oil Week in Accra, where Ghana’s Energy Minister, John Jinapor, called for African countries to work together while keeping their markets open to investors.

Jinapor said the continent’s energy transition should not obscure the continuing challenge of providing reliable energy to people and economies. “Despite the energy transition that is taking place, energy security remains a puzzle for Africa,” he said.

He urged African countries to cooperate on how to advance their energy agenda, promote competition and remain open to investment. He also said oil and gas exploration should continue as part of efforts to improve energy security.
