Tanzanian government to cover funeral costs for five family members lost in boat accident

The Tanzanian government has pledged to cover the funeral expenses, including coffins and transportation, for five members of the same family who tragically drowned when their boat capsized in Lake Nyumba ya Mungu, Moshi District. The incident occurred on July 23, 2026.

The victims, identified as Maria Andrea, Yustina Lazaro, Raima Andrea, Happy Andrea, and Kelvini Andrea, were among a group of Tanzania Assemblies of God (TAG) church members from Chemchemi village heading to a conference. While eight people survived the accident, the five family members lost their lives.

Moshi District Commissioner Godfrey Mnzava visited the bereaved family to offer condolences. He assured them that the government would support the funeral arrangements, which were scheduled for Monday, July 27. "We have taken this matter up and will act on it. The government will provide transportation, and will also cover the costs of all five coffins as a gesture of comfort and solidarity in this difficult time," Mnzava stated.

Mnzava also used the opportunity to warn residents living and working near Lake Nyumba ya Mungu to be vigilant due to the unstable weather. He noted that meteorological authorities have repeatedly issued warnings about strong winds and rising water levels. He urged people to avoid unnecessary activities on the lake and for fishermen to adhere to all safety precautions while at sea. The Member of Parliament for Moshi Rural, Morris Makoi, also attended the scene, contributing food and drinks to support the grieving community.
