Taoyuan City Pushes for Northern Cross-Island Highway National Scenic Area Amid Boundary Revisions

The Taoyuan City government is actively working to establish the Northern Cross-Island Highway National Scenic Area, a project that has seen significant revisions. A public hearing on the matter was held in Fuxing District, where the city's Scenic Area Management Office presented the latest progress.

Since the initial proposal was submitted to the Directorate General of Highways, Ministry of Transportation and Communications, in 2022, the plan has been revised four times. These revisions include adjustments to the planned boundaries, notably excluding two indigenous communities located in Yilan County from the designated area.

The effort to create the national scenic area aims to promote tourism and preserve the region's natural and cultural heritage. The ongoing consultations and revisions reflect the complexities of balancing development with the needs and concerns of local communities, particularly indigenous groups.
