Taoyuan's first shared basketball-soccer court opens at Qingpu Sports Park

Taoyuan City has unveiled its first shared basketball and soccer court at Qingpu Sports Park, a move aimed at breaking traditional single-sport venue limitations. The innovative facility integrates five-a-side soccer onto two existing basketball courts, enhancing the efficiency and diversity of sports spaces available to the public.

The project, a collaboration between the Taoyuan City Government's Department of Sports and the Ministry of Education's "Optimizing National Sports and Competition Environment Plan," involved an investment of approximately NT$7.4 million. The city government secured NT$4.44 million in subsidies from the ministry, contributing NT$2.96 million from its own budget. This initiative transforms the two standard basketball courts into a versatile venue that can host two standard basketball games or one standard five-a-side soccer match.

Taoyuan Mayor Chang San-cheng highlighted the city's commitment to creating a diverse sports environment. He noted that the shared court addresses the increasing popularity of soccer and the growing demand for suitable venues. "Five-a-side soccer has the advantages of requiring smaller venues and being easy to promote, making it an important foundation for developing grassroots soccer," Chang stated. He anticipates the new facility will serve as a crucial space for practice, exchange, and tournaments for school and community teams, further boosting the utilization of sports facilities and encouraging more citizens to participate in sports.

City Council Speaker Chiu Yi-sheng emphasized the need for public sports facilities to evolve with changing sporting trends. He praised the integration of basketball and five-a-side soccer, demonstrating how limited space can be maximized for multiple uses. This project, he added, reflects the city government's responsiveness to public opinion and its flexibility in planning public infrastructure to provide a higher quality and more diverse sports environment for residents.

The combination of basketball courts and five-a-side soccer fields in this project creates a shared court with functions for both sports, allowing limited space to achieve the greatest effectiveness.
