Tarai districts return to normalcy after deadly Sunsari violence

Life is gradually returning to normal across multiple districts in Koshi and Madhes provinces following days of unrest. The disturbances, which began with deadly security force firing in Sunsari's Dewanganj, had led to protests spreading to neighboring areas.

The easing of tensions followed a series of agreements reached with the families of those killed, the completion of funerals, and extensive dialogue involving the government, local administrations, political parties, and community leaders. Sunsari, Saptari, Siraha, Dhanusha, and Parsa had experienced heightened tensions after violence erupted on July 26 when security forces opened fire during a clash between two groups, resulting in casualties.

Authorities have lifted curfews and prohibitory orders in the affected districts, allowing markets, public transport, and daily activities to resume. However, security personnel remain deployed in sensitive locations to prevent any potential escalation. In Dewanganj, the epicenter of the unrest, the prohibitory order was lifted Monday evening, with police reporting a peaceful situation and gradual resumption of normal activities.

Home Minister Sudan Gurung played a key role in de-escalating the situation, visiting Dewanganj and subsequently reaching an agreement with the families of the deceased. Further talks in Siraha also contributed to stabilizing the situation. The administration is now focused on assessing damages and losses incurred during the vandalism and arson.

Tragically, a third individual injured in the Dewanganj violence died on Tuesday while undergoing treatment in Kathmandu, bringing the total number of fatalities to three. Ten people were initially injured in the incident.

Since the prohibitory order was lifted at 7 pm on Monday, the overall situation in Sunsari has remained peaceful. Normal activities are gradually resuming, but security monitoring continues to prevent any possible escalation.
