Taveuni students get LANA assurance

Students on the Fijian island of Taveuni who might miss their upcoming Literacy and Numeracy Assessment due to transport disruptions will be given a chance to sit the exam on a different date. This assurance comes from the Permanent Secretary for Education, Navin Raj, who stated that affected students would be considered under the Ministry’s Assessment Policy.

The concern arises as Taveuni bus operators are pushing for higher fares, creating a risk of disruption to school transport services. The Ministry of Education is actively collaborating with the Land Transport Authority (LTA), the Fiji Police Force, the Commissioner Northern’s Office, local schools, and transport providers to ensure students are not disadvantaged.

Arrangements may be made for affected students to sit the assessment on another approved date to ensure they are not disadvantaged.

To mitigate potential issues, the LTA has identified standby transport providers along affected routes. Transport Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau confirmed that the government is preparing measures to maintain school transport services, including deploying licensed carriers and minibuses if necessary. Additionally, transport vouchers will be provided to Taveuni schools as officials continue to monitor the situation closely while fare negotiations proceed.
