Tavuya Village Launches Crab Farming Project

Tavuya Village in Rewa is embarking on an ambitious five-year development project focused on crab farming. The initiative aims to create jobs, reduce poverty, and foster a self-sustaining local economy.

The village plans to develop 10 crab ponds over the next five years, utilizing traditional land and natural resources. Construction has already begun on the first pond, measuring approximately 50 by 50 feet.

Village leaders state the project aligns with the provincial Great Council of Chiefs' vision. They expect it to provide employment, engage young people in productive work, and generate income for households. Financial projections indicate each pond could generate about $36,000 in annual revenue from crab sales, with earnings expected to rise as more ponds become operational.

The long-term objective is to establish a sustainable income source that will bolster household livelihoods and fund future community development.
