TBB Election Marathon: Vahap Seçer Signals 'Continued Service'

Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and Union of Municipalities of Turkey (TBB) Deputy Chairman Vahap Seçer has signaled his intent to continue leading the TBB, asserting that the current trajectory suggests he will retain the position. Speaking ahead of the TBB elections scheduled for May 2, Seçer conveyed confidence in the Republican People's Party's (CHP) candidate, indicating that his own party's nominee is well-positioned. He stressed that the TBB operates on principles of fairness, extending support not only to CHP-affiliated municipalities but also to those belonging to the Cumhur İttifak (People's Alliance) and other opposition parties. This commitment to equitable support will guide his work for the remainder of the term.

Seçer, who assumed the role of TBB Deputy Chairman following the arrest of Zeydan Karalar in July, has guided the union through the remainder of the previous two-year term. He underscored the TBB's significance as an institution established by law, uniting 1,400 municipalities. The union manages a substantial budget, channeling financial aid, equipment, and heavy machinery to municipalities. Furthermore, it supports projects, monitors international developments relevant to local governance, and provides crucial training to enhance the capacity and efficiency of municipal staff. The TBB also organizes workshops and panels addressing contemporary issues faced by municipalities and the nation.

Bizim yaptığımız uygulamalarda adalet kavramı son derece önemli. Çünkü her siyasi partiye mensup belediyeler var. Bunlara belli kriterler gözetilerek bunun üzerinden yapılan değerlendirmelerle eşit tavır ortaya koymak lazım. Destekler yaparken bu adalet mekanizmasını iyi çalıştırmak lazım.

Reflecting on the past two years, Seçer described the period as successful, emphasizing the paramount importance of justice in the TBB's operations. He reiterated that support distribution must be based on objective criteria, ensuring equal treatment for municipalities from all political parties. This principle of fairness is central to the TBB's mandate, aiming to foster a collaborative environment where all local governments can thrive and better serve their citizens. The upcoming election will determine the leadership for the next three-year term, with Seçer seeking the continued support of the TBB's general assembly members.
