Teaching Internships Get First Increase to NT$15,000 as Education Minister Tells Trainees: You Are Not Alone

A higher stipend is greeting Taiwan’s newest group of prospective teachers as they enter schools for their education internships. The monthly support has risen for the first time to NT$15,000, making them the first interns to receive the increased amount.

Education Minister Cheng Ying-yao wrote to students beginning their internships in the first semester of the 115th academic year. He described the placement as the point where prospective teachers move from classroom desks to the teaching platform and bring theory into real classrooms.

The interns will learn to identify children’s needs, build supportive classrooms, manage classes and work with teams. Cheng acknowledged that they may face uncertainty, but told them, “Education internships are not a test, but a process that accompanies your growth.”

He also wrote, “You are not alone,” saying the Education Ministry, teacher-training universities and internship institutions would work together to build a support system. Cheng said interns were more than transmitters of knowledge and urged them to recognize each child’s individuality and potential.

The ministry increased the stipend from NT$10,000 to NT$15,000 a month in August. About 5,500 interns are expected to benefit, with the change intended to reduce financial pressure during the six-month training period and allow them to focus more closely on professional development and teaching.
