Team Nigeria Athletes Laud National Sports Commission for Commonwealth Games Preparation

Nigerian athletes preparing for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, have expressed strong commendation for the National Sports Commission (NSC). They described the support received as unprecedented, citing quality preparation and significantly improved welfare conditions leading up to the major multi-sport event.

Team Nigeria's Captain and Paralympic champion, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, spoke from the team's training camp in Aberdeen, highlighting the conducive environment created by the NSC. This environment, she noted, allows athletes to concentrate fully on their training. Oluwafemiayo, a world record holder, emphasized the athlete-centered approach adopted by the Commission, pointing to the timely provision of training facilities, high-quality kits, enhanced welfare packages, accommodation, and comprehensive medical support.

Other members of Team Nigeria echoed Oluwafemiayo's sentiments, describing a camp atmosphere filled with optimism, unity, and a shared determination to achieve success for Nigeria. They specifically noted that the NSC's early planning has helped mitigate many challenges that have historically hampered Nigeria's performance in international competitions. The athletes pledged to repay the confidence placed in them by delivering outstanding performances and securing medals.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, 2026. Nigeria, recognized as one of Africa's leading sporting nations following its performance at the Birmingham 2022 Games, is expected to compete vigorously in sports such as athletics, weightlifting, boxing, wrestling, and para-sports. Several reigning champions and world-class athletes are targeting podium finishes.
