Team Nigeria’s Commonwealth Games success in Glasgow

Team Nigeria has delivered a heartwarming performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing a total of 24 medals and finishing seventh on the overall medal table. This achievement marks Nigeria as the best-performing African country at the quadrennial event, which featured approximately 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories.

The Nigerian contingent, comprising 72 athletes competing in 10 sports, clinched 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals. This success provides a much-needed positive story for Nigeria, often in the international spotlight for less favorable news such as corruption, insurgency, and economic challenges.

While the total medal haul is fewer than the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, the Glasgow Games were scaled down due to limited preparation time and budget constraints after Victoria, Australia, withdrew as host. Sports like wrestling and table tennis, which traditionally contribute significantly to Nigeria's medal tally, were removed from the program.

Despite these challenges, Nigerian athletes delivered several standout performances.
