Technical Defect Cancels Tenth Castor Container Transport of Nuclear Waste

The planned tenth transport of a Castor container carrying nuclear waste has been canceled due to a technical malfunction with the transport vehicle. The container, which was set to travel from the former Jülich research reactor site to the interim storage facility in Ahaus, approximately 170 kilometers away, never departed.

Police reported that a timely repair or spontaneous replacement of the specialized vehicle was not possible on Wednesday evening, leading to the decision to halt the transport. Authorities emphasized that the defect was confined solely to the tractor unit and posed no danger to the transport container itself or its contents. The vehicle and its cargo remain secured at the Jülich site.

This incident occurred despite a previous transport the night before proceeding without issues. Both days saw minor protests related to the relocation of the 152 Castor containers, which represents one of the largest road transports of nuclear waste in decades. The containers hold roughly 300,000 fuel element spheres.

Transport routes and schedules are kept confidential for security reasons and are typically accompanied by a significant police presence. The cancellation highlights the logistical complexities and potential vulnerabilities involved in the long-term management and transportation of nuclear waste.
