Ted Lasso Returns for Fourth Season, Takes on Women's Football Team

After many believed the story had concluded, the beloved series "Ted Lasso" has surprised fans with a return for its fourth season. The optimistic coach is back in Richmond, facing a completely different challenge that will test his unwavering positivity. The show premiered on August 5th on Apple TV+, bringing back familiar faces and introducing new plotlines.

For viewers who said goodbye to Ted as he returned to Kansas to be closer to his son in May 2023, this comeback is an unexpected but welcome gift. Although the third season wrapped up most character arcs, leaving a sense of finality, creator and star Jason Sudeikis clearly felt the world of AFC Richmond still held untold stories. The new season, comprising ten episodes, promises a return to the warmth and optimism that made the series a global phenomenon.

The main driver of the plot in the new season is a complete shift in Ted's coaching career. After leading the AFC Richmond men's team from obscurity to a second-place finish in the Premier League, Lasso now faces what Apple calls "his greatest challenge yet." At the urging of club owner Rebecca Welton, he takes charge of the newly established women's football team, the "Lady Greyhounds," competing in the second division. This change, subtly hinted at in the third season's finale, shifts the focus from the men's locker room to a new group of players, their stories, and the team spirit Ted must build from scratch.

Ted's return to Richmond also means reuniting with the core original cast. Jason Sudeikis reprises his role as Ted, alongside Hannah Waddingham as Rebecca, Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent, Juno Temple as Keeley Jones, Brendan Hunt as Coach Beard, and Jeremy Swift as Leslie Higgins. However, a significant change that may disappoint many is the absence of most AFC Richmond players. The departure of Phil Dunster, who played the pivotal character Jamie Tartt, will be particularly felt. Dunster could not join the fourth season due to scheduling conflicts with the new HBO series "Rooster." The cast is, however, enriched by new faces, including Tanya Reynolds and Abbie Hern. Ted's son, Henry, now a skilled young footballer, is played by Grant Feely.
