Teen who livestreamed San Diego mosque shooting charged with aiding and abetting murder

A 17-year-old North Carolina girl has been charged with murder after prosecutors accused her of livestreaming a shooting at a San Diego mosque and distributing the attackers’ white-supremacist writings.

Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill said the girl was arrested the previous week. A grand jury indicted her on three counts of murder and one count of conspiracy on Monday, shortly before she was due to begin the school year. Authorities did not name her during the news conference in Winston-Salem.

“The individual here, locally, was the person who was recording the livestream,” O’Neill said. “She disseminated that information and she published their manifesto.” Under North Carolina law, he said, aiding-and-abetting charges carry the same penalties as if the accused had carried out the attack herself.

The May 18 shooting took place at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Cain Clark, 17, and Caleb Vazquez, 18, entered the center before a security guard exchanged gunfire with them and initiated a lockdown. The guard, Amin Abdullah, and two other men were killed. The attackers later took their own lives in a nearby vehicle.

The pair left writings that expressed hatred toward a wide range of people and cited the 2019 Christchurch mosque shooter, who killed 51 people, as an influence. The lockdown helped protect 140 children who were nearby, according to the account.
