Teenager Nathan Thomas becomes university professor and Guinness World Record holder at 18

At just 18 years old, Nathan Thomas has achieved what many aspire to throughout their lives, becoming a university engineering professor and earning a place in the Guinness World Records. He delivered his first lecture at Miami Dade College at 18 years and 346 days, breaking a record previously held since 1717 by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at 19.

Thomas also surpassed Alia Sabur, who was recognized as the world's youngest university professor in 2008, by 16 days. His passion for STEM subjects, including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, ignited in childhood, fueled by his engineer parents. He found particular inspiration in his mother's ability to simplify complex concepts.

His academic journey began early, enrolling in university courses at Miami Dade College at age 10 through a dual-degree program while still in high school. By 14, he was studying Electrical Engineering at Florida International University, graduating with honors at 18 with both a bachelor's and a master's degree.

Returning to Miami Dade College in August 2023, Thomas joined the faculty to teach "COP 2270: C for Engineers." He noted that age was not a barrier in the classroom, emphasizing that respect is built on a shared commitment to learning. "Once you're in that environment, everyone is there for the same reason: to learn. Age doesn't factor into that," he stated.

Despite these significant accomplishments, Thomas continues to set new goals. He is currently pursuing a law degree at the University of Miami, aiming to become a Juris Doctor by 2028, while also teaching university classes virtually.
