Teenager on e-bike killed in hit-and-run on Clare-Limerick border

A boy in his mid-teens was killed in a hit-and-run near Cloonlara on the Clare-Limerick border shortly after 11pm on Friday.

Emergency services found the e-bike rider unresponsive on the L3050 at Cottage Cross. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A second vehicle failed to remain at the scene.

Garda investigators will examine the area, with diversions in place. The coroner has been notified and a postmortem will be arranged. Gardaí are asking road users who were in the Cloonlara area at the time and may have camera footage to provide it.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact Henry Garda station, the Garda Confidential Line or any Garda station. Garda figures show 127 road deaths up to September 4, compared with 112 in 2025. Drivers account for the largest share this year, with 47 deaths, followed by passengers with 27. Government officials have expressed concern about the recent rise in road fatalities, as this year’s total is tracking above last year’s decade-high figure.
