Telia Boosts Mobile Capacity for Massive Jessica Shy Concerts in Vilnius

Vilnius's Vingis Park is set to host two sold-out concerts by popular artist Jessica Shy, drawing an estimated 50,000 fans for each performance. This massive gathering presents a significant challenge not only for event organizers but also for the mobile network infrastructure.

Ramūnas Mikalauskas, head of Telia's radio network, explained that while the existing two base stations normally suffice for the park, the sheer volume of people will necessitate additional capacity. "The mobile network cannot provide the same maximum speed to everyone at once. The more people gather in one square meter, the more network capacity has to be shared, leading to more challenges," Mikalauskas stated.

To address this, Telia is deploying an additional mobile base station, bringing the total to three within the concert area. This move is crucial for managing the expected surge in data consumption, which can increase tenfold during such large events. We want to ensure that about 50,000 people can use mobile internet as smoothly as possible throughout the entire event," Mikalauskas added.

The operator notes that attendees not only make calls and send messages but also actively share photos, videos, and live streams on social media. This real-time content creation and sharing significantly boosts data traffic. Telia employs network segmentation and antenna direction to distribute user loads across different network elements, a strategy also used in stadiums to manage high data volumes effectively.
