Tragedy struck Lima, Peru, early Wednesday when a fire engulfed a family home in the La Victoria district, claiming the lives of 10 individuals, including five children. Police Chief Oscar Arriola stated that forensic experts are meticulously examining the scene to determine the origin, conditions, and causes of the fire. "We are conducting an investigation with criminal investigators to establish the beginning, circumstances, and causes of this fire," Arriola told reporters, emphasizing the thoroughness of the ongoing inquiry.

Adding a disturbing dimension to the tragedy, media outlets are reporting that the fire may have been deliberately set by extortionists. These reports suggest that the perpetrators targeted a neighboring electric motorcycle rental company, potentially using the fire as a means of intimidation or coercion. The Peruvian Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) confirmed the urban fire resulted in 10 fatalities and two injuries, rendering two houses uninhabitable.
