Tennis: Djokovic enters US Open, aiming for more historical records

Novak Djokovic is set to compete in the US Open, which begins at the end of August, as he continues his pursuit of multiple historical records. The 39-year-old Serbian star aims to win his 25th Grand Slam singles title, which would break the all-time record. He also has his sights set on becoming the oldest-ever champion at the U.S. National Lawn Tennis Association (USNLTA) tournament, surpassing William Larned, who won at age 38 in 1911.

Djokovic, currently ranked World No. 7, has won four of his 24 Grand Slam titles at the U.S. Open, with victories in 2011, 2015, 2018, and 2023. His potential fifth title in New York would also extend his Grand Slam singles record. The field includes strong contenders like Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev, as well as a potentially returning Carlos Alcaraz from injury, making Djokovic's path to the title challenging.

Beyond the championship, Djokovic is also chasing the record for most match wins at the U.S. Open. He currently holds 95 wins, trailing Jimmy Connors' record of 98. If Djokovic reaches the quarterfinals, he would achieve 99 wins, surpassing Connors. However, he also needs to match Connors' 115 total U.S. Open appearances, a feat that would require him to reach the semifinals, as he played 110 matches in the tournament so far. Last year, he was eliminated in the semifinals by Alcaraz in straight sets.
