Tense Encounter Between Jill Biden and Melania Trump Detailed in Memoir

Former First Lady Jill Biden has revealed details of a notably strained and cold encounter with Melania Trump during the inauguration of Donald Trump on January 20, 2025. In her new memoir, Biden describes the traditional limousine ride between the two first ladies as being filled with uncomfortable silence and very little communication.

Despite attempts to break the ice, the conversation remained minimal. Biden noted that Melania Trump was reserved, with discussions largely limited to comments about the cold winter weather. "Melania was constantly trying to shift the topic to the weather," Biden wrote. Even an attempt to discuss Melania's son Barron's studies at New York University yielded a curt response: "NYU," Melania reportedly said, looking out the window.

Biden suggests that the tension stemmed partly from past disputes, specifically mentioning the 2022 search of Mar-a-Lago. "Melania personally blamed Joe for the search of her private rooms at Mar-a-Lago," Biden wrote. She expressed empathy for Melania's experience, stating, "I have sympathy for her because I went through the same kind of search myself. I knew how disturbing it was when agents searched your underwear drawer."

The memoir also touches upon Biden's sadness regarding the renovations to the East Wing carried out by Trump's team. Additionally, Biden recalled that Melania Trump did not accept her invitation for a traditional pre-inauguration tea in 2021 and did not reciprocate the gesture in 2025.
