Tensions rise in the Gulf as Houthi embargo targets Saudi Arabia amid U.S.-Iran conflict

The Gulf region is experiencing a significant escalation in tensions, marked by escalating threats and retaliatory actions between the United States and Iran. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed further attacks against Iran, stating that Tehran "will pay many times over" for any American casualties. This warning comes as the U.S. death toll in the conflict has risen to 17 since its inception.

Iran has responded to U.S. strikes, which now target seven countries in the region, by attacking American allies such as Kuwait and Bahrain. Additionally, Iran reportedly struck another vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire and forcing the crew to abandon ship. Maritime traffic in the Strait has been significantly disrupted, with only an average of 10 ships transiting daily between Friday and Sunday, many following routes controlled by Iran, according to naval monitoring firm Kpler.

Adding to the volatile situation, Houthi rebels in Yemen, who are allied with Iran, have declared a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia due to its support for Washington. This move could affect over 3% of the global oil market. The Bab el-Mandeb strait, at the southern end of the Red Sea, is not typically a critical oil transit point. However, Saudi Arabia has increasingly relied on it as an alternative to Hormuz amid the escalating tensions. In recent months, the kingdom has exported over 3.6 million barrels of crude oil and refined products daily via Bab el-Mandeb, primarily destined for South Korea, Japan, and China.

Mediators are actively working to broker a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, concerned that the conflict could settle into a dangerous pattern of remaining below the threshold of total war while continuing to destabilize regional economies. Qatar has proposed a 10-day ceasefire and the lifting of navigation restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz to de-escalate the situation, following the failure of a preliminary peace agreement in mid-June. Despite various ceasefire proposals presented to Iran, mediators report no follow-up from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the U.S. "is always open to a diplomatic solution," and that Iran has, through intermediaries, signaled a willingness to engage in dialogue.
